Car accident concussions are surprisingly common. Many car accident victims report feeling not quite right following a crash, but they don’t know what’s wrong. Unfortunately, they erroneously believe that they can’t suffer a concussion because they didn’t slam their head against anything.

At Pursley Law Firm, we are here to tell you that you can suffer a concussion in many ways, regardless of whether you bump your head. Sometimes even violent shaking is enough to disrupt how the brain is supposed to function. Please call us to speak with our Carlsbad car accident concussion lawyer to discuss whether an accident led to your concussion and what legal rights to compensation you have.

What is a Concussion?

Concussions damage the axons in the brain which are responsible for sending neurological signals. Any vigorous shaking of the head can cause the brain to move inside the skull. Because the brain has many lobes, some parts can move faster than others, twisting and tearing the axons. This violent motion causes a concussion.

Watch for these common concussion symptoms following an accident:

  • Sleep disruption
  • Memory loss
  • Slurred speech
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Blurred vision
  • Loss of balance
  • Problems with coordination
  • Mood swings
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Convulsions

It is also possible to lose consciousness briefly after a concussion, though it is more common after a more severe traumatic brain injury. Never assume you haven’t suffered a brain injury simply because you didn’t pass out.

At the hospital, a doctor can listen to you describe your symptoms and possibly order some tests. Generally, however, you need to get sufficient rest to let your brain heal. There is no pill or surgery which will speed up your recovery. A very mild concussion might take several months to slowly heal, while more serious injuries will require substantial physical therapy to help you regain the use of your limbs. A doctor might also prescribe medication to help with sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression.

Concussion symptoms can last for a very long time, making it hard to work or spend time with your family. Unable to concentrate for long periods of time, few concussion victims can head right back to work. We highly recommend meeting with a lawyer to discuss if you have a legal claim. Many concussions are caused by rear-end collisions or T-bone accidents caused by negligent drivers.

When a driver is at fault, you might be able to sue them for compensation to cover your medical care, income loss, car damage, and pain and suffering. Our firm can help you estimate the amount you might receive.
