Pacific Beach Two-Vehicle Wreck Kills One, Injures Three

CarCrashed

Police believe that a combination of excessive speed and substance impairment caused a fatal crash on Grand Avenue near Mission Bay Drive on June 4, 2025.

San Diego police say a 21-year-old man driving a 2013 Chevrolet Corvette was speeding southbound along Mission Bay Drive, ran a red light and hit a 2018 Jeep Cherokee that was turning onto Grand Avenue.

A woman passenger in the Corvette died at the scene, SDPD said. Police said the Corvette driver and two people in the Jeep were injured.

Speed and Vehicle Collisions

During coronavirus lockdowns, a combination of empty roads and lax traffic enforcement encouraged drivers to pick up some bad habits, including speeding. This bad habit, like most others, has proven to be easy to form and hard to break.

Today, speed is a factor in about a third of the fatal car crashes in California. Excessive velocity increases the risk of a wreck and the force in a collision.

Speed multiplies stopping distance, which is the ground a vehicle covers in the few moments required for a driver to see a hazard, move his/her foot onto the brake pedal, apply the brakes, and safely stop the vehicle.

At 30mph, stopping distance is about six car lengths. At 60mph, stopping distance multiplies to approximately eighteen car lengths. Certain factors, such as weather conditions and vehicle weight, lengthen stopping distance even further.

Speed also multiplies the force in a collision between two objects, according to Newton’s Second Law of Gravity. The scientific formula, F = ma, is rather abstruse. For practical purposes in car crashes, speed transforms a non-injury “fender bender” into a serious or fatal injury collision.

Additionally, speed transforms loose objects in the passenger area, such as cell phones and backpacks, into high-speed missiles which, in many cases, are aimed directly at a victim’s head.

Substance Abuse and Vehicle Collisions

Alcohol and most drugs are legal to consume, at least in certain situations. Some people believe that if behavior is legal, that behavior is also safe. That’s simply not the case. Alcohol and drugs cloud judgement and adversely affect motor skills.

Running a red light is a classic example of these effects. Intoxicated or impaired drivers cannot accurately judge things like the distance between their vehicles and a traffic light that’s about to change color. Then, if they realize their mistake (which is a big “if”), they cannot react quickly enough to avoid a wreck.

Scientifically, intoxication and impairment are basically the same thing. To a Carlsbad personal injury lawyer, these two things are radically different.

Intoxication is the complete loss of mental and physical faculties, usually because the driver’s BAC level is above the legal limit. If emergency responders cite the driver for DUI, the tortfeasor (negligent driver) could be responsible for damages as a matter of law, under the negligence per se rule.

If the tortfeasor’s blood contains any amount of alcohol between a trace amount and the legal limit, the tortfeasor was impaired. Evidence of impairment usually includes bloodshot eyes, odor of alcohol in the vehicle, and other physical symptoms.

Since impairment reduces driving ability, a Carlsbad personal injury lawyer uses the ordinary negligence doctrine to obtain compensation in these matters. Ordinary negligence is basically a lack of ordinary care.
